Open source software
One of the main reasons why Linux is widely used for web hosting worldwide is the easy availability of open source software applications.
Many software developers spend their time developing software which can be used by anyone without paying a fee for downloading and installation. The only condition is that the software should retain a link to the developers (or any website specified by the developer - usually the sponsor) website. Users can voluntarily donate any amount they choose to the software developer.
Unlike shareware, where the software can be used for free for a certain number of days, after which it expires, the open source software remains free. However, the user may upgrade to better version if required.
